YOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO - MOLLEPATA - HUMANTAY LAKE – SALKANTAY PAMPA CAMP.

We pick you up from their respective places or hotel, we’ll leave Cusco around 4:30 am and start our 2-hour drive to the town of Mollepata. Once in Mollepata, we’ll stop to have a delicious breakfast and pay the entrance fee of 20 soles to the local municipality (this is not included in the tour price).

Once finished, we’ll continue by car for another hour to Soraypampa where we will meet with the muleteers and horses who will carry our equipment, food, and 7 kilos of each hikers personal belongings during the trek. From there, we’ll start the uphill hike to Humantay lake, reaching it after about 1:45 hours.

When we will arrive at the lake, you will have enougth time to explore, take photos, and listen to our guide to explain the significance of Humantay Lake.

After, we’ll hike downhill for 1:45 hours untill soraypamapa, then we will continue for another hour more to have our restorative lunch at our exclusive campsite Salkantay Pampa. After lunch a nap and you’ll have free time to explore the beautiful area, If you are tired, you can just rest in the Mountain Huts, that come equipped with personal mattress, pillows. in the afternoon a campfire, is made in honor of life where our guide will share Andean stories, then we will offer you tea and dinner. As well as spend the night in MOUNTAIN HUTS, sheltered by the sacred mountains.
Salkantay Pampa  is an exclusive, private camp located at (13,450 feet), is closer to the snowy salkantay than other camps, is a unique area that offers additional short hikes, fantastic mountains viewpoints.

DAY 2: SALKANTAY PAMPA CAMP - SALKANTAY PASS - WAYRACMACHAY - CHAULLAY.

our cooks will Wake you bright and early with a hot cup of coffee or coca tea, around 6:00 am.admiring the spectacular views of the snowcapped mountains, as you take your time to repack and get ready for the nutritious breakfast that will be served around 6:30 am. After breakfast, you will start the ascent for 2 hours to the Salkantay Trek’s highest point at 4630 m (15190 feet). Once on top, you will take some time to explore and enjoy the mountains take pictures  learn about the mountain (Apus), and take part in a small traditional Andean ritual for the Apus mountain god

then we’ll start hiking down for 2 hours to Wayracmachay ones there we will rest with a delicious lunch, after we will continue for 3 more hours of downhill hiking to the second camp, Chaullay, which is located at (9,500 feet) and marks the beginning of the Peruvian Amazon. At our Chaullay camp, we will provide you with your camping equipment (ANDEN HUTS ), hot tea, and dinner.

There is also an optional hot shower offered by locals that can be used for 10 soles. You can also buy some drinks sush as beer, soda, water.

DAY 3: CHAULLAY - LA PLAYA SAHUAYACO - SANTA TERESA - HOT SPRINGS.

On the third day, we will wake up around 6:00 am in the beautiful (but warm) jungle.with a cup of coca tea, as the cooks are preparing the delicious breakfast.

Around 7:00 am, we’ll begin our 5-hour hike along the Santa Teresa Valley which is formed by the Salkantay River, after 5 hours hiking we arrive to La Playa Sahuayaco. 

Along the trail you’ll see plantations for coffee, bananas, avocados, coca, passion fruit, and more. Once we arrive at La Playa Sahuayaco, we will take local transportation to the third campsite, Santa Teresa, which is about a one-hour drive.

At camp, we’ll share a delicious lunch before heading out to the hot springs of Colcampayo (optional). Colcampayo is about a 15-minute car ride from camp. We’ll spend a couple of hours relaxing in the natural, clean water of the hot springs before heading back to camp for tea time, a warm dinner, and a group bonfire. All of these activities are optional, so if you’d rather lay back and relax at camp—you are certainly welcomed to!

DAY 4: SANTA TERESA - LUCMABAMBA - LLACTAPATA - HIDROELECTRICA - AGUAS CALIENTES.

Llactapata is an Inca ruin located along the Salkantay trail, which you will have the chance to visit on the fourth day. From Llactapata, you will enjoy a beautiful view of Machu Picchu from a unique angle. For this beautiful trek, we’ll start with an early breakfast, around 5:30 am, before taking local transportation for 45 minutes to Lucmabamba.

Upon arrival, we’ll have our coffee tour with a local family they will show us all the coffe preparation process, We will have the opportunity to participate in the elaboration of our gasoline (coffee) to be on wire and  have the enought energy to start the 3-hour uphill hike along the original Inca trail until we arrive in the Inca ruins of Llactapata once at the inca site you will have plenty of time in Llactapata to enjoy the views of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu Mountain, and if the weather is good, you’ll get one more glimpse of Salkantay Mountain.

Afterward, we’ll hike downhill for 2 hours, arriving in Hidroelectrical for a nutritious lunch and much-earned rest. The final part of the hike is a 3-hour hike along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes. Once you arrive in the small town, we’ll take you to your hotel where you can shower and rest before our final supper at 7:00 pm in a local restaurant. After dinner, we’ll head to bed, anxious for our final day and ultimate reward: Machu Picchu

 DAY 5: MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO.

Finally, we go to see the impressive Machu Picchu. You’ll wake around 4:00 am to get ready for the hike to Machu Picchu main entrance. Each person will be given a packed breakfast and we will start the 30-minute walk to Puente Ruinas checkpoint where you will have to show your passport, Machu Picchu ticket, and student ID if applicable. After passing the first checkpoint, we will climb stairs for about one hour to reach Machu Picchu’s main gate by 6:00 am.

Once everybody meets at the gate, we enter Machu Picchu and begin our 2.5-hour guided tour in the famous Inca site, where you will learn everything about The Lost City of The Incas.

After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own. The time that you will spend in Machu Picchu will depend on how you are going back to Cusco (train or car) and whether you want to climb the Montaña Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu Mountain, which must be booked in advance the entrance tickets.

  • If you booked the extra ticket for HUAYNAPICCHU you will need 2.5 hour for hiking up and down
  • If you booked the extra ticket for MACHU PICCHU MONATAÑA you will need 3.5 hour for hiking up and down

After visiting Machu Picchu and its surrounding area is time to return to Cusco.

If you are a student, you need to send us a copy or picture of both side of your STUDENT CARD also a picture or photo of your PASSPORT in order to verify, to get discount The student card must be an original student ID gives from the university in PVC material and it must have the next requirements printed on it: University information, personal student information, student picture, and expiration date valid only for one year, it year must coincide with the year that student visit Machupicchu, the discount until 25 years old. How many days do I need to acclimate myself in Cusco before the trek?

We recommend that you spend at least 2 to 3 days in the city of Cusco to help acclimate yourself and to avoid possible problems associated with altitude sickness during your trip. If you have already been to another destination with a high altitude before arriving to Cusco, we still recommend that you spend a full day in Cusco to rest, recuperate from your trip, and to enjoy the beautiful views of the city before departing for your trek.

What is the weather like in Salkantay?

In general Salkantay in known for its unpredictable weather, so no matter what time of year please come prepared for both warm and cold temperatures, and rainy and dry conditions. It helps to know what season you’re traveling in though and Salkantay experiences two main seasons, the rainy season (November-March) and the dry season (April-October).

During the rainy, warmer season temperatures average around 15°C / 60°F during the day and 5°C / 40°F at night. However, with a high chance of rain and wind at the Salkantay Pass, these temperatures may feel colder to you.

During the dry season the weather is sunny and clear and on average 20° C / 70 °F during the day but much colder at night, around -3 °C / 26 °F.

Also, after the second day, as we descend into the Peruvian Amazon basin, the weather changes to a more humid and warmer climate and these humid temperatures are consistent throughout the year.

What clothes do I need?

We recommend two long-sleeve trekking shirts, two short-sleeve shirts, leggings or trekking pants, shorts, four pairs of underwear, sweatpants for the night, three pairs of hiking socks, a rain poncho, an insulated jacket for the Salkantay Pass, gloves, beanie, a hat with a brim, hiking boots, a bathing suit (if you plan to visit the hot springs), and slip on sandals to rest your feet at the campsites.

What bags should I pack?

On the Salkantay Trek you will be permitted one personal daypack (a 30 to 50 L backpack is sufficient) and before your trek we will give you and one extra duffle bag from our office which can be used to carry your extra clothes and personal items.

What is the weight limit for my duffle bag?

Your weight limit for the duffle bag is 7 kg/15.4 pounds. Our horsemen will carry your duffle for you along with the food and the camping equipment. It’s important to keep in mind that you will not have access to your articles of clothing in this bag until the end of each day, since the horsemen and the horses will always be ahead of the group. Therefore, store the items you need immediate access to in your backpack and store the items you won’t need until the evening in your duffle bag.

How many meals are included?

The Salkantay 5D/4N Trek includes 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 4 dinners. The only meals not included are breakfast on the first day and lunch/dinner on the last day after the tour of Machu Picchu.

What type food is served on the trek?

We serve a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes including various natural teas with rice, chicken, beef, fish, pasta, salad, potatoes, eggs, pancakes, bread, and for lunch and dinner each meal begins with a soup.

Do you offer vegetarian/vegan options?

Yes, vegetarian/vegan options are available. Let us know before your trek so we can accommodate and inform your chef.

Do you rent sleeping bags?

Yes, you can rent sleeping bags from our office for 10 USD. They are down feather sleeping bags that work in temperatures as low as -10°C.

Do you rent walking sticks?

Yes, you can rent a pair of walking sticks from our office for 10 USD.

Can I leave extra luggage in your office?

Yes, you can leave extra luggage in our office free of charge.

What are the sleeping conditions like at the campsites?

We currently have ANDEAN HUTS and TENTS in each campsite. The tents have a 4-person capacity but we only use them for 2 people per tent. We also include sleeping pads in all the tents.

In Aguas Calientes you will sleep in a hostel.

What hostel does MACHUPICCHU TREKKING PERU Adventures use in Aguas Calientes?

If you have booked directly through MACHUPICCHU TREKKING PERU, we partner with ECO MAPI or HALLPA INN (3 minutes from the main square) in Aguas Calientes and you will be staying there. the hostels have hot showers, wifi, and comfortable beds.

What are the minimum and maximum group sizes?

The minimum group size is 4 people and the maximum group size is 16 people. In the case of 16 people the group will have guide assistant.

What do you recommend to help alleviate altitude sickness?

Chew coca leaves, drink coca tea or manzanilla tea (for stomach aches) at your campsites, and ask your guide for assistance. They are trained professionals equipped with the necessary aids to alleviate any discomfort associated with the altitude. They carry Sorochin pills, coca leaves, agua florida, and extra oxygen bottles.

Do I need hiking experience to complete this trek?

Prior hiking experience is recommended but not required. Our guides are trained to assist hikers of all fitness levels and all trekking experience levels so you will never be left behind. Most important of all is to acclimate yourself to the altitude before your trek.

If I need a break from walking during the trek, is there an option to take a horse?

Yes, on the second day during the assent from the Soraypampa campsite to the Salkantay Pass there is an option to rent a horse for 100 soles for the three-hour assent. Ask your guide for assistance, the horse can be rented at the Soraypampa property.

How much money should I bring with me?

For additional expenses along the route, we recommend bringing 300 soles (though you most likely won’t spend it all) and in small bills too to be used at the campsites and along the trek.

What additional expenses should I expect during the trek?

Bathrooms are free at the campsites but cost 1 sol along the route. Keep small change on hand too for water bottles, snacks, and toilet paper along the route.

Other additional expenses include:

Hot shower at the Chaullay campsite (10 soles)
Cocalmayo hot springs in Santa Teresa (25 soles)
Zipline on day 4 of the Salkantay 5D/4N Trek (20 USD in our office, 30 USD to book at the campsite)
Optional bus that runs between Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu entrance (12 USD one way, 24 USD roud trip)
Food/souvenirs in Aguas Calientes.

Note: Aguas Calientes is an expensive town, expect to pay ~30 soles per meal.
Tips for guide, horsemen, and cooks.

What is the difference between the 5-day Salkantay trek and the 4-day Salkantay trek?

Both treks follow the same route up until day 3. After lunch on the 3rd day in Playa Sahuayaco, The 5 Days Salkantay trekkers take a 45 min bus to Santa Teresa where they will spend the night, with the option to go to the Cocalmayo Hot Springs in the evening and the Zip line the next day (day 4).

After lunch on the 3rd day in Playa Sahuayaco, the 4 Day Salkantay trekkers take a bus from the lunch spot to Hidroeléctrica. In Hidroeléctrica they will walk three hours to Aguas Calientes where they will spend the night in a hostel.

Also, the Salkantay 4D/3N trek covers a total distance of 60 km/ 37 miles and the Salkantay 5D/4N trek covers 72 km/ 45 miles.

Is my ticket to Machu Picchu included in the price?

Yes, the entrance ticket to Machu Picchu is included in all of our Salkantay tour packages.

How many hours do we spend in Machu Picchu?

In total you are permitted 3 hours in the park. The guided tour of Machu Picchu is approximately 2 hours after the tour you have 1 hour of free time to further explore the ruins on your own. KEEP IN MIND that regulations have changed and the tour in Machu Picchu is all a one-way path. That is, you cannot backtrack and revisit sites once you have passed them. In addition, once you exit the park you cannot re-enter. Therefore, take your time completing the route in Machu Picchu.

If I don’t want to hike to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes, can I take a bus?

Yes there the option to take the bus that runs between Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes. It is 12 USD one-way and 24 USD for there and back. Tickets can be purchased in Aguas Calientes, ask your guide for further assistance when you arrive.

When do I reserve Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain?

First, send us an email asking about availability. Then, if available, select which mountain you would like to climb when you make your reservation online. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are an additional 50 USD each.

What is Huayna Picchu Mountain?

Huayna Picchu Mountain is home to the Temple of the Moon and is the famous mountain peak seen behind the ruins in all the classic photos of Machu Picchu. Huayna Picchu is an approximately 45 minute climb with more ruins at the top and an incredible view of the Machu Picchu ruins down below. In total the visit to Huayna Picchu is approximately 2 hours. Huayna Picchu Mountain is an additional 50 USD.

What is the difference between Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain?

Machu Picchu refers to the ruins, which you will already have an entrance ticket to and will visit on a guided tour. Machu Picchu Mountain is an additional hike within Machu Picchu that offers a much higher view of the ruins and overlooks the entire valley. Machu Picchu Mountain is an additional 50 USD.

In the case of an emergency and I need to return to Cusco during the trek, what is the process?

If at any point you need to return to Cusco during your trek, MACHUPICCHU TREKKING PERU is not responsible for any refund and/or extra expenses for your return to Cusco. There are plenty of transportation options available at each campsite should a return be necessary. Ask your guide for further assistance.

What age range is suitable for this tour?

Generally, the minimum age is 10 years. From there there is no specific age limit, but the idea is that adolescents, young people, adults are in the right physical shape for this adventure. In the case of older adults, it would be advisable to carry out a prior self-assessment.

How high is the snowy Salkantay?

The snowy Salkantay reaches 6,271 meters above sea level (m.s.n.m.). The trek route that leads to Machu Picchu has its highest point in the ‘Abra Salcantay’, at 4,650 m.a.s.l. From there you can see the peak of the snowy mountain.

How's the weather?

The snowy mountain itself has an extremely cold climate (several degrees Celsius below 0º). The climate during the Salkantay trek, on the other hand, is varied. The intense sun and the cold at night in the first days are changed by the tropical environment of the last.

When is the best time to do the Salkantay trek?

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is in the dry season (from April to October). During those months, there is less chance of rain so the roads are in better condition. In the dry season, however, the days are sunnier and the nights colder. According to mountaineering experts, June, July and August; It is the best time to do the Salkantay trek.

What is the flora and fauna like?

The 5 days and 4 nights that the Salkantay trek lasts, you will go through landscapes with a great variety of flora and fauna. Among the species of flowers and plants, the orchid and ichu (Andean grass) stand out. WHEN TO TRAVEL?

The best time to make the trip is in the dry season, that is, between May and October. The most advisable month is May since everything is still green after the rains. On the other hand, the coldest month is June.

WHAT TO BRING?

First of all, a backpack, in addition to the one that will carry the horse, as well as a sleeping bag of at least -5 degrees. The clothing should be suitable for trekking in a highland climate, with heat during the day and very cold at night. To store clothes, bring 3 bags that allow you to keep clean clothes separate from dirty ones. HOW TO AVOID ALTITUDE SICKNESS?

1.- Machupicchu Trekking Peru rates do not include:

    • Travel insurance. You are responsible to acquire travel insurance to cover the dates of your journey. [See Insurance below]
    • Visa fees. [see Visas below]
    • Porters or bag carrying (unless stated in the tour description), laundry, telephone calls, items of a personal nature and gratuities (unless stated in the tour description).
    • Side trips or excursions shown as optional.
    • Food, other than stated in the tour description
    • Entrance fees to national parks, archaeological parks or municipal taxes (unless stated in the tour description), which must usually be paid on site in cash.
    • Airline Tickets, other than stated in the tour description. It is possible to book airline tickets with Machupicchu Trekking Perú E.I.R.L. contact us for more information.

In some locations, the services of a representative are not included, and, particularly if you have so requested, you may have only a driver who speaks a little English.

  1. Machupicchu Trekking Perú local Tour operator, is not responsible for cases of force majeure (unexpected or uncontrollable events) (according to law), nor is it responsible for the actions of passengers.
  2. Machupicchu Trekking Perú local Tour operator, reserves the right to cancel or change any trip due weather, political conditions or pandemic. It also reserves the right to cancel any trip due to the client’s unsuitability due to age, ill health, poor fitness, intoxication etc.
  3. Any missed tours due to the circumstances mentioned above (weather conditions, political conditions or pandemic) cannot be refunded.
  4. Machupicchu Trekking Perú local Tour operator, reserves the right to cancel the passenger’s reservation on a tour if they have not paid the total sum of the tour at least 12 hours prior to departure, UNLESS the passenger has made an alternative arrangement with the Machupicchu Trekking Perú staff.
  5. Machupicchu Trekking Perú reserves the right to work with other agencies if on certain dates they do not have enough passengers for a departure.
  6. In the case that damages are caused to third parties, all the expenses claimed from Machupicchu Trekking Perú that originate from the above -mentioned incident will be charged to the client, who will have no right to later claims.
  7. When a passenger wishes to cancel their trip, the refund shall be according to the decision taken by Machupicchu Trekking Perú, according to the Cancellation and Refund Policy mentioned below.

 

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY


The 50% down payment

  •  Machupicchu Trekking Perú is non-refundable, except in serious situations (as described below).
  • * This does not include bookings of the Inca Trail, airfares and hotels: unfortunately, the 50% down payment for the Inca Trail, airfares and hotels are NON-REFUNDABLE.

Important: services, tours, treks and packages booked with Machupicchu Trekking Perú is non-refundable, but could be changed of date without any administration charge.

 

DEADLINE TO CHANGE TOUR DATE

Tour date changes will be subject to availability of income to the Inca Trail, Machupicchu and hotels, without any administration charge, in the following time frame:

 Inca Trail – at the latest 20 days prior to the departure date.

Tour with hotel – at the latest 15 days prior to the departure date.

Tours without hotel – at the latest 10 days prior to the departure date.

Important: Third party administration fees have to be paid at the moment of the date change (airline fees, transport companies, hotels, partner agency charges & entrance fee)

•           If the client wants to change the date tour within the days timeframe prior to departure, the client will be charged an Administration Fee.

DEADLINE OF CANCELLATION

  • Cancellations will not be accepted if not submitted in writing, at the latest 20 days prior to the departure date. This policy applies for the 50% down -payment.
  • different time frames apply for Groups and complete Peru Itineraries, in this case individual arrangements about cancellations have been made at the moment of booking).

** In case of cancellation due to a serious illness or another serious situation, the following procedures are applicable (situations will be judged at the discretion of the Machupicchu Trekking Perú reservations department):

In case of cancellation due to a serious illness or another serious situation (measured by the Machupicchu Trekking Perú reservations department), the following procedures are applicable:

  • Cancellations will be accepted in writing only.
  • In the case of illness or pregnancy, a medical declaration that will be evaluated by the doctor of Machupicchu Trekking Perú, needs to be attached to your written statement.
  • In the case of military service, an official declaration also needs to be attached to your written statement.
  • Machupicchu Trekking Perú Tour operator will evaluate the situation together with the client and will consider a PARTIAL refund of deposit. Machupicchu Trekking Perú Administration Fee applies.
  • Third party administration fees (airline fees, transport companies, hotels, partner agency charges & entrance fee) are exempt from any refund; these charges still must be paid for by the client.

Machupicchu Trekking Perú Travel Agency will refund the respective amount at the latest 30 days after the date it received the written cancellation statement, in most cases by wire transfer.

WHAT ABOUT THE BALANCE?

50% balance, to avoid the high credit card fees in Peru, you may pay IN CASH at our office (US dollars or Peruvian soles) here in Cusco. There are many ATM within the historical center to withdraw money.  You can also pay by your CREDIT CARD but you will have to pay a 5% service fee, to the iZipay collection company.

ADMINISTRATIVE PENALTY FOR CHANGES

• There will be no cost of the Administrative Penalty in the date changes of a tour, walk or package in the indicated periods.

• Administrative fees charged by third parties such as (airlines, transport companies or associated providers, entrance fee) will be paid by the passenger, at the moment of the date chage.

The client will be charged an Administration Fee of US $20.00 Fee for all changes in bookings before the days frame time.

 

INSURANCE
We recommend that all customers obtain a travel or medical insurance policy in their home countries.

  • Passengers are responsible for ensuring that their travel or medical insurance policy covers the activity or sport in which they are participating Passengers may be required to show us a certificate of this insurance policy prior to the commencement of the itinerary.
  • Machupicchu Trekking Perú Tour Operator, cannot be held responsible for personal injuries or any belonging that are lost, damage or left in vehicles or accommodations. 


VISAS

  • Currently, visitors from Western Europe, the USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand or Australia do not require a visa to enter Peru, however all visitors are responsible for enquiring about their particular case. Visitors from other countries must enquire about obtaining a visa at the nearest Embassy or Consulate.
